Unique portable application for health care professionals

Labrox Ltd, a Finnish instrument design and manufacturing company, has launched a lateral flow Point of Care Testing (PoCT) reader prototype based on Lateral-Flow (LF) strips and Upcon™ technology.The new application is an ideal solution for health care professionals.

PoCT is defined as medical testing at or near the site of patient care. The driving notion behind PoCT is to bring the test conveniently and immediately to the patient. This increases the likelihood that the patient, physician and care team will receive the results quicker, which allows immediate clinical management decisions to be made.

“The small size and portability of Labrox PoCT reader enables healthcare professionals to perform important decision aiding tests at the point of care. Be that a local hospital, primary or community care centre or even at home of the patient,” says Rasmus Hautala, Business Director at Labrox.

Revolutionary technology and partnership

Upcon™ is a comprehensive technology concept built around a novel label technology known as photon upconversion. In this technology, upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) convert near-infrared (NIR) radiation to visible light via a unique process that enables the photoluminescence to be measured entirely free of autofluorescence and scattered excitation light. This revolutionary technology enables lateral flow assays with ELISA sensitivity. 

“The development of this application has been carried out in collaboration with organisations and companies in the Finnish life science cluster, such as TEKES, VTT, Kaivogen Oy, Oy MedixBiochemica Ab and others,” emphasizes Rasmus Hautala.
